Gratitude

grati·tude(grati to̵̅o̅d′, -tyo̵̅o̅d′) noun      a feeling of thankful appreciation for favors or benefits received; thankfulness

It’s Thanksgiving Weekend and I am sitting in my mother’s kitchen, the fire from the wood stove warming my body while all the things I want to write are warming my spirit!

It has been a choppy start to our fall season and we appreciate the flexibility and understanding shown by families and tutors as scheduling adjustments were made to accommodate our expansion project.

The team from Eastern Restoration have done an amazing job of blending old and new – you will be hard pressed to remember just how things ‘used to be’ once you come through the doors for the first time!  The past week ended with gusto at the Centre and I shake my head in wonder at all that has occurred.  In a flurry of activity, carpenters and electricians, networking and security specialists, an IT Superhero and members of our Board of Directors rallied to meet deadlines and commitments.  There was, underlying it all, a sense of appreciation and respect for the work that we do and a feeling that all of the efforts were for the children we serve.  Huge thanks goes to Norm MacLeod who took on the role of project manager with incredible dedication, spending countless hours on site.  Thanks, too, to Centre “Graduate”, Heather Armstrong, and her mother, Barb Bingham, who arrived in the midst of Saturday’s rainstorm to get the bookworm back on the wall!

I hope that you will join us when we celebrate our Third Birthday on Sunday, October 25 and see the results of the labours of so many hands.  It will truly be a time of celebration and your presence will make it all the richer!

Happy Thanksgiving,

Thelma Greg an, Director

POSTCARDS FROM ORLANDO

Would you like to be filled in on what’s happening at the International Dyslexia Association Annual Conference, through my eyes?  Once again, I hope to be able to send daily electronic postcards of my experiences and learning to any interested friends.  Drop me an email to get yourself on my list – thelma@srlcfc.com

SIGHS FROM CYBERSPACE

I’ve had a few email glitches this last while and have just learned that some of my summer emails didn’t leave our server.  If you’ve missed a newsletter, or not had a reply to a note you sent me, please ask about it.  Do keep us informed if your contact information has changed or if you no longer wish to receive “Notes and News”.  This is such an efficient way of communicating when everything works as it should!

READY FOR FLU SEASON

Special thanks to Pauline Layland who switched her tutor hat for her Public Health one and talked us through some of the things we need to be thinking about as we head into flu season.  Appreciation also goes to Dartmouth Masonic Properties for getting us set up with wall mounted hand sanitizers!

BOOK WORM

Our Bookworm had to crawl off the walls for the painting but is now in position!   We have even more space to cover to complete the goal of encircling the Centre in 2009.  Don’t forget to fill in a segment with the title of your most recent book - email contributions greatly appreciated!

YOU CAN HELP!

Donations to the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada Learning Centres for Children – Halifax are eligible for tax receipts.  Blue envelopes for this purpose are available.  We are funded by your contributions.  Donations of juice boxes are also much appreciated!

FAMILY RESOURCE LIBRARY

Take time to have a look at our ever-growing Family Resource Library.  These books and DVDs have been purchased with donations from Centre Friends, Equity Lodge #106, Ad Astra Lodge #130 and the Halifax Chapter #7 of the Order of the Eastern Star.  A number of new titles will be arriving shortly. Please record the information about what you have borrowed in the sign out book.  If something you read strikes a chord, why not write a few sentences about it for publication in future newsletters?

FAREWELL AND HELLO

It is with gratitude for the gifts they have given that we bid a fond farewell to tutors Cheryl Foston Young and Maryann Moffitt .  Cheryl and her family moved to Whitby , Ontario in June and Maryann is headed for New Liskeard this month.  Both of these women have shared much with our community and we will miss their energy, commitment and their friendship.

At the same time, we welcome seven new tutor trainees to the fold:  Debbie Horwich, Gayle Saunders, Greg Johnson, Linda Landry, Lisa Foster, Lenora Whitman and Marion MacSween.  This enthusiastic group will begin their training with Barbara this weekend.  I know that they will bring much to the richness of our community and will be warmly welcomed as we all become acquainted.

I awoke this morning with devout thanksgiving for my friends, the old and the new.
